Welcome to Career Counselling

Our Services

Both personal and career counselling services are available through the Office of Student Development and Services during the entire year. Confidential, individualized counselling support is available at no cost to all full-time, part-time, undergraduate and graduate students at Nipissing University. Brief intervention involving referral assistance is also available to all alumni and previously registered students.

During your university studies, you may find yourself re-evaluating your career plan or looking for ways to tie your interests and education together. Talking to a Counsellor can help you when you have questions in either of these situations.

In career counselling, you may benefit by exploring:
  • Your occupational interests
  • Your educational choices
  • How values, interests, aptitudes, personality preferences and experiences relate to career development
  • What career options exist for graduates with your degree
  • Relationships between your interests and the world of work
  • Locate, evaluate, and interpret information regarding specific careers
  • Self-awareness and understanding of personal attributes and obstacles to career development
  • How your education plans and accomplishments match with careers of interest
  • Career interest inventories and interpretations of the results

What can you expect?

You can also expect a thorough assessment and exploration of your needs and experiences, a mutually developed counselling intervention plan, and an opportunity to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the counselling support.  Sometimes brief intervention will be needed when solutions to issues are found quickly and effectively.  In other cases, solutions may be reached through a more extensive approach.  Your involvement is essential in determining which approach is taken.

You can be assured of receiving the highest quality counselling experience in all respects. Counsellors have met and maintain provincial certification and registration requirements with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW). Counsellors adhere to a Code of Ethics. They continuously engage in professional development in areas related to providing counselling to the post-secondary student population.

Information that you share with the Counsellor will be held in the strictest of confidence.  Prior to information being released to a third party, your signed consent is required. The terms of confidentiality and the exceptional circumstances in which a Counsellor would disclose information without your consent are discussed fully during your first appointment.

If you have questions about Career Counselling check out the FAQ or contact Counselling Services directly. We would be pleased to address your questions or concerns.
