Career Counselling FAQ

Here are some frequently asked questions and the answers:

Q.    What kinds of jobs are out there for university graduates with a degree like mine?

A.    There is rarely a direct line between a degree and a particular job. Employers hire people not degrees. It is important to consider all of your strengths and skills as you prepare for a job or career. Academic Programs at Nipissing University provide a link to ‘what you can do with this major’ on their respective program websites. Check out the brief video presentation: What can I do with my degree…?

Q.    What do I need in order to gain admission into a specific graduate or professional program?

A.    Counsellors will explore with you the requirements of the specific graduate or professional program that you are interested in. Counsellors also have access to online resources that may be helpful for you in your exploration and planning.

Q.     Are there different ways to gain admission to the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program?

A.     Yes. One option is to apply to the B.Ed. program after completion of your undergraduate degree. You can also apply to the Concurrent Education program. Students successfully completing the Concurrent Education program will receive either a BA (Honours) or BSc (Honours) depending on program, along with a Bachelor of Education degree, which leads to certification with the Ontario College of Teachers.
Yet another option, the only Concurrent Education program in Ontario exclusive to ECE graduates is offered at the Nipissing University Muskoka Campus. The Concurrent Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education-Child and Family Studies program is a full-time four year program. Q.     I’m finishing my B.Ed. degree, what other career options are there aside from a classroom teacher?

A.     Completing a professional program in education certainly opens a lot of doors for you in the work world! Achieving the completion of a teaching degree demonstrates that you have a range of marketable and transferable skills which are in demand in our society by employers. Be sure to attend the Education Job Fair at Nipissing University to network and gather resource information. You can also make an appointment with a Counsellor to discuss your particular plans and questions.

Q.     Are there career planning seminars offered at Nipissing University?

A.    Yes. The following career planning seminars are offered in the Fall term and Winter term, What can I do with my degree?, Hands On with TypeFocus, Hands On with Bridges/Choices Planner, and Hands On with Career Cruising. Refer to Events for career planning seminar dates and times.
