Biidaaban Community Service-Learning for Students

Biidaaban Community Service-Learning (BCSL)is a unique experiential learning program. Through effective partnerships with faculty and community organizations, students are offered the opportunity to apply classroom theory to real world experiences.

BCSL was created to help students

  • develop leadership skills
  • make a difference by investing time and energy in the local community
  • put classroom learning into practice to strengthen understanding and enhance future career skills
  • broaden awareness of community issues

Through these partnerships community organizations offer students guidance, supervision and hands on experience. The faculty members offer instruction, guidance and support, and the student receives training and understanding of theory while offering assistance and new ideas to the community.

The BCSL office works to make the integration of a community experience for students as easy as possible. We work to match interests and abilities with available service opportunites in the community and arrange the placements based on this. We also provide orientation and awareness sessions, contact information (names, maps etc.) for organizations and may be able to assist with transportation arrangements. Please contact BCSL staff for more information.

The university also offers an Introduction to Community Service-Learning (UNIV 2011) course that focuses on leadership skills, social justice issues, ethics and critical thinking. Please see the academic calendar for more information.
