Biidaaban Welcome to Community

This August 2018, Enji giigdoyang, the Office of Indigenous Initiatives at Nipissing University has partnered with the Schulich School of Education and Canadore College to bring a transition program to our campus. Welcome to Community will support you and your family in your transition to post-secondary in a new city. This program is FREE and will include food, transportation during the day, and childcare; all you need to do is register. (Exact dates to be determined soon!)

Day 1 of the Welcome to Community program is geared towards familiarizing you with the Nipissing University and Canadore College campuses. Here you will have the chance to meet some of the staff, faculty and Elders, check out the classrooms, cafeterias, the library, the bookstore, the athletic centre, the tipi and the beautiful trails in our backyard. We will also have academic workshops to make sure you’re all set for the new school year.

Day 2 of this program was specially designed to ensure that you have a smooth transition into our community. We know how challenging moving to a new city can be, so we want to show you some of our favourite spots and important services, so that you’re not left trying to find everything on your own! We will meet on campus in the morning, and from there head to Nipissing First Nation. Next, we will make our way into North Bay, where we’ll show you where the grocery stores, shopping mall, the public library, the North Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre, and other services. We are also going to visit the Fire and Police stations. After day 2, we are certain you will feel a lot more comfortable with your new surroundings!

Day 3 will be unique for everyone; if you have children who are starting at a new primary or secondary school this September, you won’t want to miss this opportunity! We will organize taxis leaving from the Nipissing/Canadore campus to bring you to the school where your child or children are enrolled. We will send you there with a volunteer who will help you navigate your way to the school, meet the principle, visit the classrooms and even meet some of the teachers.

If you or somebody you know is relocating to attend Nipissing University or Canadore College this September, we want to help! For more information about the Welcome to Community program, don’t hesitate to send us an email or give us a call (contact information provided below). Again, this program is FREE and will include food, transportation during the day and childcare; all you need to do is register. We hope to see you then!
