General Information

 STUDENT HIRING INFORMATION


If you are hiring a student employee we ask that you print out the forms located at the following link, fully complete the forms with your student employee (both supervisor and student sections) and submit the forms either via email to timesheets@nipissingu.ca or to Human Resources by inter-office mail.
Please note that Human Resources does not keep a supply of these forms in the office.

Timesheets should also be submitted via email to timesheets@nipissingu.ca.

Student wages are based on the number of years’ of employment experience the student has working at Nipissing University (1 academic year = September to August). 

Wages are as follows:

  • Starting Rate: $11.86 (includes 4% vacation pay)
  • After 1 academic year experience: $11.96 (includes 4% vacation pay)

  • After 2 academic years’ experience $12.06 (includes 4% vacation pay)

  • After 3 or more years’ experience $12.16 (includes 4% vacation pay)

If a Research Assistant is being hired, Dan St. Georges must approve the rate of pay and initial all timesheets before they are submitted to payroll.

Students MAY NOT work for more than an average of 10 hours per week for all positions within the University from September to April.

A student should not hold more than one position at a time (Note taking, Proctoring and Peer Tutoring are exceptions).

Please note ESA rules dictate one half-hour unpaid break must be taken when the shift is longer than 5 hours. Be sure to indicate that the break was taken on the timesheets.

TRAINING

It is the responsibility of the supervisor to ensure that each student employee has the required training as follows:

Environmental Health and Safety Training is mandatory for every employee.  Each employee must complete the training module during their first shift. At the end of the training a certificate will be issued, this must be printed and forwarded to Human Resources along with the employee’s first time sheet. Please be advised that this training only needs to be taken once during their employment at Nipissing University.

AODA (Customer Service Standard) Training is mandatory for every employee. Each employee must complete the training module during their first shift working and complete the Acknowledgement form after the training is done. The Acknowledgement form must be printed and forwarded to Human Resources along with the employee’s first time sheet. Again, please be advised that this training only needs to be taken once during their employment at Nipissing University.

If the student employee is working in a lab it is your responsibility as a supervisor to ensure that the employee receives the required lab safety and/or WHMIS training. Please contact Jeff Landry at jeffl@nipissingu.ca or ext. 4811 to coordinate this training.

Criminal Record Check and/or Vulnerable Sector Screening is mandatory if the student you are employing will be working with children or are working in Facilities, Residence or Athletics.  The Criminal Record Check and/or a Vulnerable Sector Screening will be required before the student can begin their position. Please contact Human Resources at ext. 4253 regarding these requirements.
