JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Student Learning and Transitions (SLT) Student Assistant aides the department’s various programs, initiatives, and services which seek to support students in achieving academic, social, and personal success at Nipissing University (e.g., New Student Orientation, Laker Orientation, Summer Writing Clinic).

DUTIES INCLUDE:

The Student Learning and Transitions (SLT) Assistant will aide the SLT team by assisting with:

  • Promoting the department through social media channels in alignment with the SLT Social Media Strategy and recommend additional opportunities to increase engagement through existing and potential platforms;
  • Coordinating activities and events in conjunction with professional staff for diverse student groups (e.g., first generation students, mature and transfer students);
  • Interacting with diverse student populations throughout the student life cycle (e.g., prospective students in advance of Open House events, incoming students in advance of New Student Orientation);
  • Provide one-on-one academic and life skill development support through virtual chat and drop-in sessions;
  • Collaborate with other Peer Educators to develop and implement student life and learning initiatives to promote student academic, social, and personal development;
  • Promotion and awareness campaigns for the Magnet platform and assist in communicating with community partners and employers regarding the platform;
  • Researching and data gathering relating to best practices within student development and services;
  • Preparing recruitment and selection processes for Peer Educator positions;
  • Participate in ongoing professional development including in-service opportunities provided by the department; 
  • Completion of utilization and satisfaction reports; and
  • Other duties as assigned.                            

Prior to assuming the duties of the position, candidates must complete the following:

  • In person, orientation and training session(s) as outlined by the department
  • Completion and submission of all required paperwork

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to attend the Peer Educator Selection Carousel on Saturday, February 3rd, 2018.
  • Student (2nd year and above) with strong academic standing (cumulative average of 75% or higher).
  • Excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of Nipissing University programs, initiatives, and services that promote student academic and personal success.
