JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Gen1: First in the Family Program Student Assistant assists in the planning and delivery of programming, events, and support initiatives for First Generation students.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

The Gen1: First in the Family Program Student Assistant will assist with the following:

  • Facilitating regular community building initiatives amongst first-generation students;
  • Collaborating across the department, division, institution, and community to provide self-development opportunities to registered program participants that focus on leadership and personal development, civic engagement, and academic success;
  • Participating in recruitment and outreach initiatives in support of the Student Learning and Transitions department and the Gen1: First in the Family program (i.e. class visits, booths, short presentations, social media posts);
  • Promoting the department and the Gen1 program through approved social media channels (i.e. regularly contributing to the GEN1 Instagram);
  • Preparing content for multiple audiences across different formats (online, print, etc) as required;
  • Displaying professional communication in regular contact with students through e-mail, one-to-one or in small groups to foster mentoring relationships and provide timely referrals to appropriate campus and community resources;
  • Researching and data gathering relating to best practices within student development and service as well as initiatives for the Gen1 program;
  • Participate in ongoing professional development including in-service opportunities provided by the department; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Prior to assuming the duties of the position, candidates must complete the following:

  • In person, orientation and training session(s) as outlined by the department
  • Completion and submission of all required paperwork

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicants must be able to attend the hiring carousel on Saturday, February 3rd, 2018.
  • Student (2nd year and above) with strong academic standing (cumulative average of 70% or higher).
  • Excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from various educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of Nipissing University programs, initiatives, and services that promote student academic and personal success
