JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Residence Community Student Assistant is a senior student staff position whose primary responsibility is to promote the residence life program in accordance with the Residence Life Values. The Residence Community Student Assistant is responsible for aiding in the development of a strong and positive community by working closely with their complex’s Residence Life Staff.  Residence Community Student Assistants have responsibilities in the areas of community development, student conduct, team development, and administration.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

The Residence Community Student Assistant will assist with the following:

  • S​​upport the development, marketing, and implementation of programs in accordance with the Residence Life Community Development Model (as set out by the Residence Life staff at training), as well as advise, support and track the progress of a team of Dons in completing programming requirements
  • Maintain regular office hours during which the Community Advisor completes assigned tasks, meets with students and team members
  • Assist in the conduct process, from documentation, following up with students and staff, analyzing patterns and trends, and when necessary, administering educational outcomes
  • Develop coaching and mentoring relationships with members of the Residence Life Team and students
  • Assume on-call shifts according to the schedule and conduct responsibilities, which includes upholding the Residence Community Living Standards, and responding to potential emergency or crisis situations
  • Role model appropriate personal behaviour and academic success at all times, and by adhering to the Residence Community Living Standards and the Nipissing University Student Code of Conduct
  • Prior to assuming the role, candidates must complete the following:
    • Attend Residence Life Team Spring Orientation
    • Online and in-person pre-service training
    • Completion and submission of all required paperwork prior to pre-service training in August, including a Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening and Standard First Aid and CPR level C training
  • Participate in ongoing training and workshops throughout the duration of employment
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to attend the Peer Educator Selection Carousel on Saturday, February 3, 2018
  • Must have minimum one year of experience as a Residence Don or Academic Don
  • Upper-Year Student (3rd Year or Above) with good academic standing (cumulative average of 65% or higher).
  • Excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and initiative.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of Nipissing University programs, initiatives, and services that promote student academic and personal success.
