The Academic Success Program Student Assistants assist with supporting academic success of their peers through academic coaching. The Student Facilitators act as mentors by challenging, supporting, and guiding students towards academic and personal success by identifying their personal strengths and creating a plan of action to address their academic concerns.


The Academic Success Program Student Assistants will help the SLT team by assisting with:

  • Recruiting students (including those who are academically at-risk) to the Academic Success Program through a call/e-mail campaign and various outreach initiatives;
  • Developing individualized Academic Success Plans with program participants in consultation with the Student Learning Coordinator;
  • Conducting one-on-one meetings with assigned students to monitor progress and provide resources and referrals;
  • Facilitate and promote Student Success Workshops under the direction of the Student Learning Coordinator;
  • Staffing recruitment and selection processes for Peer Educator positions;
  • Researching and data gathering relating to best practices within student development and services;
  • Participate in ongoing professional development including in-service opportunities provided by the department;
  • Completion of utilization and satisfaction reports; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Prior to assuming the duties of the position, candidates must complete the following:

  • In person, orientation and training session(s) as outlined by the department
  • Completion and submission of all required paperwork


  • Must be able to attend the Peer Educator Selection Carousel on Saturday, February 3rd, 2018.
  • Student (3rd year and above) with strong academic standing (cumulative average of 75% or higher).
  • Excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of Nipissing University programs, initiatives, and services that promote student academic and personal success.
  • Be available for a minimum 6 hours per week during 8:30-4:30 timeslot
