The Institute of Integrative Health Education and Research will position Nipissing University as an innovative leader in Healthy Active Living research. The Institute will focus on pure and applied research pertaining to literacy in two areas: physical literacy, which increases the chances of people being active for life, thus reducing the burden on the health care system associated with physical inactivity; and health literacy, which enables people over their lifetimes to seek out, comprehend, evaluate, and use health information and techniques to make informed choices, select better conditioning and treatment plans, reduce health risks, and increase quality of life. Both are young sciences that will feed Nipissing University's School of Physical Health Education and its School of Nursing and Allied Health Studies. It will build on the University's excellence in education, literacy and knowledge transfer.
The Institute will benefit from unique collaborative opportunities that exist with current and future partners of the University. Opportunities to convert R&D into new products for healthy active living will be explored with Nipissing University's Commercialization Partnerships and Technology Centre. Research will focus on understanding how people acquire enhanced knowledge and skills for healthy active living.
In developing the Institute of Integrative Health Education and Research, the goal is to provide an expanded range of research capabilities and space to supplement current research being conducted at the university. Our vision for the Institute includes the development of a Motor Control Lab, a Metabolic Chamber, a Human Performance and Exercise Physiology Lab, a Physical Activity and Health Psychology Lab, a Biomechanics Lab, a Regional Sports Testing Facility, a new 1,100 square foot lecture hall, and a Therapy Clinic.
Nipissing University has already recruited a number of qualified, leading-edge researchers, however, in order to realize its vision for the Institute of Integrative Health Education Studies and Research, it needs space to house the infrastructure to support their work and additional researchers.
