Centre for Teaching and Learning Innovation

Recruiting and equipping people with the knowledge and skills to fill 21st century jobs is a must. That is why Nipissing University is developing an innovative technology-mediated centre for improved access to post-secondary learning. The expansion will increase enrolment capacity online and offsite, making it a highly efficient project given the proportionately small infrastructure requirements.

Known as The Centre for Teaching and Learning Innovation, the Centre will be a vital location at Nipissing for flexible learning contexts with students on and off-campus. Keeping in focus with the digital economy, facilities will include innovative science laboratories and classrooms for on-site, on-line, and blended delivery learning.

The Centre’s primary focus is delivering flexible learning strategies to a diverse student body. Ideally, this facility will offer novel opportunities to build workplace literacies for immigrants and resource workers; supporting learning needs of students with disabilities and those studying English as a second language.

Through our continued support of Aboriginal education initiatives, the Centre will enable graduates of Nipissing's Native Teachers Education Program to obtain a BSc or BA degree from their home communities. Encouraging practicing First Nations and Aboriginal teachers to complete their undergraduate degree will in turn support a more effective preparation of Canada 's fastest growing population for university enrollment.

Furthermore, the Centre will provide expanded and enhanced facilities for students in Nipissing’s education degree program and returning practicing teachers to purse graduate studies and learn the science, technology, and math they have missed in undergraduate studies. Through the flexible learning focus, such educational goals may accomplished in person or online.

This new 126,000 square foot, four-level centre planned for the Nipissing campus that will cost approximately $45.0 million, including site preparation. Currently 25% of the project is ready for construction with the remainder at the detail design stage. The building will help the University address its large classroom deficit with three floors of Audio Visual equipped, technology mediated learning spaces.
  • 1st floor: flexible theatre for up to 200 students and three - 100 student capacity classrooms;
  •  2nd floor: six classrooms for up to 400 students and faculty & staff offices including the Chairs in Aboriginal Education and Literacy and;
  • 3rd floor: eight – 50 student capacity labs and offices for Arts and Science and Nursing faculty.
