Professional Courses
Nipissing University recognizes the merit in supporting professional development by its Administration and Support Staff. Financial support will vary depending on the type of course and its relationship to the current position.
1. Courses must have prior approval of the immediate supervisor and the Vice-President, Finance and Administration and must meet the following criteria.
(a) Must be job related;
(b) Must be consistent with the employee's career goals, as discussed with the immediate supervisor;
(c) Funds have been provided in the annual budget.
2. Requests must be submitted in writing to the Vice-President, Finance and Administration.
3. Reimbursement of Tuition Fees
(a) Courses directly related to the job, or undertaken at the request of the employer will be reimbursed at 100% upon successful completion. Fees may be prepaid at the option of the University;
(b) Courses that do not relate directly but do provide personal growth will be reimbursed at 50% upon successful completion.
Time Off for Professional Development
1. The employee may be allowed time, during working hours, to a maximum of five hours per week, to attend lectures in
appropriate courses; such time is to be made up on an hour-for-hour basis.
2. All requests should outline the arrangements made to oversee the work area while in class. The requests should also specify how the time will be made up while in class. Both these requirements should meet the approval of the supervisor.
3. (a) Time from work will be allowed to write examinations for approved courses;
(b) Time off will not be granted for study, although permission may be granted for use of vacation for this purpose or leave without pay;
(c) Where the writing of examinations involves extensive travel and, local monitoring cannot be arranged, make-up time may be required.
4. Exceptions to this policy may be approved by the President from a written request by the employee's supervisor.
