Students employed at Nipissing University will fall into one of two categories:
Before hiring students, supervisors should ensure that adequate funds have been approved either by a department head, a government agency, or in the case of Work Study positions, by the Manager of Financial Aid.
Postings for part-time positions should be forwarded to the Placement Office (A201) and advertised for a minimum of five working days. Successful candidates will be chosen based on their experience and ability to perform the basic tasks listed in the posting.
All students employed on campus will be paid at least the Ontario minimum wage rate. Wage rates shall be determined in accordance with the Hourly Wage Structure for Students, copies of which are available from both the Placement Office (A201) and Human Resources (A207).
Once students are hired, they should report to the Placement Office to complete Student Employment Forms. Students cannot be paid until the appropriate paperwork is complete.
Hours of Work
To ensure that satisfactory academic progress is maintained, it is recommended that students work no more that an average of 10 hours per week on campus. Supervisors shall ensure that students do not work more than eight hours in a day, and that they do not work more than five hours in a row without a half-hour meal break. A meal break is the employee’s own time and the university is not obligated to pay for the meal break. Coffee breaks are considered work time for which the student will be paid.
Termination
If, for any reason, a supervisor wishes to terminate the employment of a student that has a regular part-time position, contact should first be made with the Placement Officer or Director of Human Resources to ensure that any proposed action will not contravene the Employment Standards Act or other legislation.
Request for Allocation of Work Study Funds
The Manager of Financial Aid will send an e-mail during the month of August to all department heads requesting proposals for Work Study positions. Once positions are approved, the Placement Office will prepare a job posting based on information provided by the hiring staff or faculty member. Positions must be posted for a minimum of five business days.
Students applying for Work Study positions must first complete a Work Study Application Form available from either the Financial Aid Office (F218) or the Placement Office (A201). Once approval is received, students may apply for any available position.
