Local/Provincial/Federal Elections
As Nipissing University Student Residences are defined as multiple residences (not an apartment building or condominium), it is the right of a candidate to enter the building between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. to campaign in the common areas of a multiple residence. (Canada Elections Act 81.1b)
We recognize that it is important for residence students to have an opportunity to meet candidates for office in their area, and that the candidates meet with the residents. We would like to ensure that we offer our students the opportunity to be fully engaged in the electoral process.
The safety, security and sense of community in the residence complexes are best served by denying door-to-door access to anyone soliciting or campaigning. Please be advised that door to door campaigning in Nipissing University student residences is prohibited. (As per our RCLS solicitation policy and NUSU election guidelines.)
The majority of our residences are locked 24 hours a day, and as such, it is in the candidates’ best interest to make contact with the Residence Manager of the complex as early as possible in the campaign, in order to arrange for access to the building.
Candidates are permitted to set up a table/booth in our common areas (lobby and/or assembly room) with the approval of the Residence Manager, who will determine the most appropriate date, time and location. Candidates who wish to meet student residents may contact the Residence Manager to arrange to reserve the assembly room and arrange a “meet the candidate” program.
Candidates may provide campaign literature (brochures, flyers etc.) for distribution to student mailboxes, but must first determine the appropriate number for each complex and have the distribution approved by the Residence Manager.
Any questions should be directed to the Director of Residence and Conference Services.
NUSU Elections
The following is a brief outline of policies pertaining to Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU) election campaigning in the on-campus residences.
Should there be any concerns about any candidate’s campaign, the Residence Office will contact the NUSU Chief Returning Officer (CRO) directly.
Nipissing University does not allow any form of door-to-door solicitation to take place in residence, whether by guests, non-residents or commercial enterprises.
Candidates may make a request, through the Residence Manager, to book a table in a residence lobby to meet residents.
The Chief Returning Officer is welcome to contact the Residence Office to arrange for an open forum (with a question and answer period) that could be held in residence. Chancellors House, Founders House and Governors House have assembly rooms that could accommodate such an event.
Each residence will accept one campaign poster (8.5”X11”) from each candidate and post it in an area designated for use during the NUSU election (or by-election). These posters will be removed within 24 hours of the close of the polls.
Campaign material is not to be distributed door-to-door or throughout the residence in any other way, nor is it to be left at the residence front desk or lobby.
Candidates may provide campaign literature (5.5”X4”) from each candidate for a one-time distribution to student mailboxes, but must first determine the appropriate number for each complex and have the distribution approved by the Residence Manager.
If a candidate has booked a table in a residence lobby, they are welcome to distribute additional campaign materials to residents at that time.
Residents supporting a candidate may place a reasonable number of campaign materials on their own doors.
