Ashworth presenting at Nipissing University Research Talk event

Dr. Liz Ashworth will lead a presentation titled “Informing Art Education practice: Perspectives of Elementary Teachers in Northeastern Ontario” as part of the Nipissing University Research Talk series on Friday, January 20, from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. in room A224.

Here’s an abstract on her presentation:

This presentation outlines an ethnographic study where perspectives of teachers regarding visual arts were examined in order to understand current elementary art education better.  A variety of interpretive enquiry methods, including interviews, observations, and document analysis, were used to interrogate the planning, implementation, and assessment practices of 19 teachers in two northeastern Ontario school boards.  Several challenges and successes regarding elementary art education were identified that suggest a wide range of practice among the teachers and school boards studied.  Overall, the findings (positive and negative) were helpful for informing art education practice at the pre-service level in order to prepare teacher-candidates to teach elementary visual arts effectively.

Refreshments will be available.
