Recently, the third induction ceremony for the Mu Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma was held at Nipissing University. During the ceremony, eight Criminal Justice majors were inducted into the Chapter. The students represented a cross section from the Policing, Criminal Justice, and Criminology streams of the Criminal Justice program. It was attended by other students, Mu Kappa members, Criminal Justice faculty, and the dean of the Faculty of Applied and Professional Studies.Nipissing’s Chapter was first inducted on March 2, 2011, at the annual Alpha Phi sigma conference held in Toronto, Ontario. In total, 18 student members, two faculty and one staff advisor were inducted as part of Mu Kappa, the first Canadian Chapter of the National Criminal Justice Honour Society.Alpha Phi Sigma recognizes academic excellence of Undergraduate and Graduate students of Criminal Justice, as well as Juris Doctorate students. The goals of Alpha Phi Sigma are to honour and promote academic excellence, community service, educational leadership and unity. Alpha Phi Sigma is the only Criminal Justice Honor Society which is a certified member of the Association of College Honor Societies and affiliated with the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. There are over 400 Chapters of Alpha Phi Sigma with over 100,000 members."Being a member of the first Canadian chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma is a huge accomplishment for me,” said student Samantha Grant. “I feel that having this on my resume will give me more opportunities when searching for a career in the criminal justice field after graduation this year. It is a way of showing my employer that I have succeeded academically without handing them my transcript. The networking opportunities are also immense and it is an easy way to keep myself updated with current information from the many professionals that are a part of the society."
