Required Police Vulnerable Sector Check

 

All Bachelor of Education Teacher Candidates must obtain and provide to the Practicum Office, a current Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC), on an annual basis. Failure to provide this documentation to the Practicum Office by the deadline below will result in the cancellation of placement for the 2017-2018 academic year.  
Exceptions to the deadline will not be made for any reason.

Please read the following information carefully and contact the Practicum Office at 519 752 1524 ext: 7503 with any questions. 

Please note that the Brantford Police Services will NOT be offering on-campus PVSC services this year.  For more information regarding local PVSC services, please visit the following link or attend at the Brantford Police Service in person at 344 Elgin St. Brantford.  


If you do not have a local Brantford address during the school year, you must attend at your local police detachment to begin the PVSC process.  Teacher Candidates requiring a PVSC request letter from the university are asked to email brant@nipissingu.ca with these requests.  

Important Information for Requesting Police Vulnerable Sector Checks:

Procedures for Completing Police Vulnerable Sector Check
 
Below are instructions for Teacher Candidates completing the required Police Vulnerable Sector Check  (PVSC). Please note that the procedures WILL VARY depending on the Police Service Provider whose services you are soliciting. Please read through the following information carefully to ensure that you clearly understand all requirements. PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO NEW LEGISLATION, THE PROCESS TO COMPLETE A PVSC CAN TAKE UP TO 120 DAYS.  Please plan accordingly. 
 
If you require a request letter (for Police Services) to obtain a Police Vulnerable Sector Check, please visit the Practicum Office to obtain this document.

*UPDATED* - Teacher Candidates in 2016/2017:

Below are instructions for Teacher Candidates completing the required PVSC process through regions with additional requirements (boards listed alphabetically).  


 Peel District School Board (Year 5 only):
 
Teacher Candidates assigned to the Peel D.S.B. are required to submit their original Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC completed within the 6 months prior to your placement block) in person to Lisa Cruickshank at the school board office (5650 Hurontario Street, Mississauga) PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF PLACEMENT.
 
Teacher Candidates who do not submit their original PVSC to the board office prior to placement, will not be allowed to attend placement. Please present your documentation in a sealed envelope marked “Confidential Criminal Record Check for BEd Placement”.  Please also include your full name on the envelope.
 
In order to meet WSIB health and safety training requirements, it is mandatory that all students complete the Ministry of Labour’s general worker awareness training webinar/video at http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/hs/training/workers.php
 Upon completion of the training, the website will provide students with a certificate of completion.  A copy of the certificate must be provided to the board along with their original Police Vulnerable Sector Check.  Students who fail to meet this requirement will not be permitted to commence their placement. 

Thames Valley District School Board:

It is the TVDSB’s expectation that Faculties of Education placing student teachers in practicum placements within the Thames Valley District School Board ensure their students have a certified true copy of a Police Record Check (Vulnerable Sector Screening) that was issued within six months of the day the document is collected by the principal of the hosting school. Prior to commencing the practicum placement duties, the Practice Teacher must provide the Principal with an original of the above mentioned document.​

 
Toronto Catholic District School Board (Year 5 only): 

Teacher Candidates assigned to the Toronto Catholic D.S.B. are required to submit their original Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) in person to the TCDSB Head Office (80 Sheppard Avenue East, 4th Floor) PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF PLACEMENT. 


Candidates who do not submit their original PVSC to the board office prior to placement will not be allowed to attend placement.  If you have questions relating to this process, please contact Alexia Ferreira and the TCDSB Head Office at 416-222-8282 ext. 2303 or alexia.ferreira@tcdsb.org.

Toronto District School Board (Year 5 only):
Teacher Candidates assigned to the Toronto D.S.B. are required to submit their original Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) to the TDSB PRC Office PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF PLACEMENT. Candidates who do not submit their original PVSC to the board office prior to the commencement of placement will not be allowed to attend placement. Candidates must submit their original PVSC by mail or in person as follows:
 
1. Mail the original to: TDSB PRC Office, 17 Fairmeadow Avenue, Room 107, Toronto ON M2P 1W6. If you require your original PVSC returned to you, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.  OR
 
2. Go in person to the TDSB PRC Office at 17 Fairmeadow Avenue, Room 107 to have your original verified.

Upper Grand District School Board (Year 5 only):
 
For Year 5 Teacher Candidates that have requested placements within the Upper Grand District School Board, please note the following:
 
Police Vulnerable Sector Checks should be submitted to the Practicum Office by the end of December, 2016 as opposed to the original date of January 20, 2017.  The Practicum office will then verify with the UGDSB.  

Please note that PVSC's MUST be dated within 6 months of your first placement start date. If you have not already applied for your PVSC, please contact your local police services to begin the process as soon as possible.  

Please stop by the Practicum Office prior to the end of December to sign a WSIB form for insurance coverage while on placement.
