CONVOCATION AWARDS

Graduating Teacher Candidates are encouraged to apply for Convocation Awards.  A complete listing of the 2011-2012 Convocation Awards are listed below. Teacher Candidates are encouraged to review the awards and submit a Convocation Award Application.  By submitting an application you will be considered for all awards.

VALEDICTORIAN AWARD

One Valedictorian will be selected to represent both the Primary/Junior and Junior/Intermediate programs.  The candidate who receives the greatest quantity and quality of peer support will be selected as the Valedictorian by the Awards Committee and Faculty.  Note: It is anticipated that the Valedictorian Address will be given at the Convocation Dinner, which will take place at the Best Western in Brantford following the Convocation Ceremony.  The successful Valedictorian must plan to be in attendance.

2011-2012 CONVOCATION AWARDS
Adele Sisson Memorial Award
To a graduating student who demonstrates qualities of citizenship and leadership among the University Campus and community.

J.W. Trusler Proficiency Award in Education
To a graduating student and is based primarily on academic achievement and for excellence in practice teaching

Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) Faculty of Education Award
 
To a graduating student who exemplifies the following criteria:
  • is enrolled full-time in an Ontario Faculty of Education and is registered in a Bachelor of Education Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate program
  • demonstrates academic excellence in Bachelor of Education courses
  • demonstrates exemplary teaching practices in practicum placements
  • demonstrates initiative to broaden personal experience in educational culture.  Some possible indicators of this (not all are required): leadership in student government at Faculty of Education; support for fellow teacher candidates; provincial/local ETFO involvement; leadership in events which benefit fellow teacher candidates; and exemplary interactions with students in a variety of educational settings
  • demonstrates a commitment to social justice and equity that is in keeping with ETFO policy
  • is recommended by both the practicum supervisor and an associate teacher, in writing, outlining how, in their opinion, the candidate meets the above criteria

Brant Haldimand Norfolk Unit, OECTA Scholarship
To a graduating student who has taken a religious education course and has done practice teaching in a Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board school.  The recipient will also have made a significant contribution to the Catholic education community.

Retired Teachers of Brantford
To a graduating student who has shown outstanding qualities of scholarship, teaching ability, and character.

The Dr. Sandra Reid Award
To a graduating student who has achieved success despite personal challenges.
$300
Rossini Lodge Cultural Award
To a graduating student who has demonstrated an interest in Italian culture, education and language.  The recipient will have had a positive experience in teaching and learning in an education setting related to the Italian culture.

Arthur Calbeck Memorial Award
To a graduating student who demonstrates high academic achievement, and is a resident of the City of Brantford or Brant County.

Millard, Rouse & Rosebrugh Chartered Accountants Award
To a graduating student who has demonstrated academic excellence.  The recipient will have also shown a strong dedication to the Concurrent Education program, an outstanding work ethic, a professional demeanour and a commitment to pursuing a career in the teaching profession.

Grand Valley Educational Society
To a graduating student from the Brantford Concurrent Education program who resides within the geographical boundaries of Brant County or the City of Brantford.  The recipient must also demonstraste a strong academic achievement, and preferably, active participation as a volunteer in the local community.

Cantalini and Williams Family Memorial Award
To a graduating student who demonstrates personal integrity, a professional demeanor and an enthusiasm for learning.  The recipient will also exemplify the values of friendship, faith, family and social conscience.  The recipient will have been involved in community-building activities at the campus and/or global projects.

Dr. David Suzuki Environmental Award
To a graduating student who has exemplified strong qualities of leadership related to environmental awareness.

Teachers' Credit Union Co-operative Spirit Award
 
To a graduating student who exemplifies the true co-operative spirit by "helping others to help themselves".  Students should exemplify the following characteristics:
  • dedicated to the philosophy that 'teaching someone to fish is better than giving someone a fish'
  • promotes and demonstrates collaborative problem solving methods by building consensus and valuing each persons' contribution
  • rolls up their sleeves and actively participates in constructive, positive relationships in the classroom and the community

To a graduating student who has demonstrated high academic achievement and a commitment to community involvement.

Turfpro Investments Inc. Award
To a graduating student who has demonstrated academic success and an interest in the performing Arts.

Tim Hortons' Community Involvement Award
To a graduating student who has demonstrated campus and community involvement, and shows pride in the Nipissing University and Brantford communities.  The recipient will have also demonstrated extraordinary leadership skills in motivating others to take part in community-based activities.
