Academic Advising

Academic advisors are available to give you advice on the best methods and means to achieve your academic goals.  An advisor can assist you by clarifying academic regulations and procedures, explain your degree requirements, and advise you towards a viable program plan and course selection.  An advisor can also outline your options if you find yourself in academic difficulty.  If you have a question about any academic matter, we will do our best to provide you with the appropriate advice. If you have further questions about the academic advising process, please read your Academic Advising Syllabus.

"Advising is fundamental in understanding what education is about, yet, at the same time, advising facilitates the process of education. Fundamentally, we come to know not only the world around us, but also ourselves, by means of a developmental process of understanding, taking responsibility, and ultimately making choices that continually define and affirm who we are.

Choice implies that possibilities and options exist. Advisors carefully address each possibility, are informed about each of these options, and clearly communicate the pros and cons of each option.  Advising cultivates and exemplifies critical thinking by investigating possibilities and making decisions and valuations based on being informed and informing others.

Advising is an act of leadership—a process of informing students and helping them to make appropriate and thoughtful choices. Not only must advisers inform and guide, but the process of advising entices students to become self-actualized with a deeper understanding of both the world and themselves.  Advising is this dynamic relationship through which an exchange of ideas and information occurs. The goal of these discussions is to facilitate a realization of where and how one stands and to realize the student’s responsibility and accountability."
