Academic Standing and Progression

Academic Standing involves the assessment of a student's eligibility to progress at the University and/or to enter or remain in a program.

Normally, a student’s Academic Standing is determined after a minimum of 18 credits have been attempted, at the end of the Fall/Winter (May) and Spring/Summer (August) semesters. Academic standing may also be assessed in January after Fall-term final grades are available.

Academic Standing is determined by a student’s cumulative average or, where applicable, a combination of cumulative average and performance in placement/practicum courses.

For each student, a cumulative percentage average will be calculated (out of 100), and this average will be used to assess a student’s eligibility to proceed in their program.

Students registered in a Session, who have registered for courses in the subsequent Session but whose ineligibility for further registration has not yet been determined by the first day of classes, will be permitted to complete any such course(s). Although credit will be retained for courses completed successfully, such credit will not alter ineligibility for further registration.

Good Academic Standing

BA, BSc, BBA, BComm, BPHE, BScN, BEd

A cumulative average of 60% is required to proceed in and graduate from the program.

Students will be removed from the BScN program if two Unsatisfactory grades have been recorded for Clinical Practicum courses.

Students will be removed from the BPHE program if two Unsatisfactory grades have been recorded for Community Leadership Placement courses.

BA (Honours), BSc (Honours) (except BA Criminal Justice-Criminology Stream) BEd

A cumulative average of 65% is required to proceed in and graduate from the program.

Students who have a cumulative average between 60-64% and have declared that they wish to be in an Honours program will be informed prior to their second year that they must raise their cumulative average to at least 65% to stay in an Honours program. They will be allowed to remain in the Honours program for their second year of study, but must achieve a minimum cumulative average of 65% by the end of their second year.

Students who do not meet the minimum cumulative average requirement for progression in an Honours program will be removed from their Honours program at the end of their second year and changed to BA or BSc General programs.

Upon completing 4th year, students in an Honours program whose final averages are below 65% may apply to graduate with a 4-Year General Degree. Otherwise, students will be required to take (or re-take) additional courses in order to qualify for the Honours degree.

BEd Consecutive

The BEd Consecutive program is offered as a one year program and must be completed in its entirety. Credit is not retained for passed courses in a failed year the Consecutive Bachelor of Education Program.

BA/BEd, BSc/BEd, BA Criminal Justice-Criminology Stream, BBA (Honours), BFA

A cumulative average of 70% is required to proceed in upper years and to graduate from the program.

BA/BEd and BSc/BEd students must achieve a minimum 67% cumulative average (Undergraduate and Education grades combined) and a Pass in the Observation and Practice Teaching course to proceed to Year 2. To proceed to Years 3, 4 and 5 of the program, students must achieve a 70% overall average, as well as a Pass in the Observation and Practice Teaching course.

Observation and Practice Teaching courses are graded as SAT or FAIL. All other EDUC courses require a minimum of 60% for a pass. Students who fail Observation and Practice Teaching or who fail an education course will be removed from their program and may initiate an appeal to the Dean to be considered on an individual basis to be allowed to proceed on probation.

BA/BEd and BSc/BEd students who do not meet the minimum cumulative average will be required to withdraw from their program.

BA Criminal Justice-Criminology Stream and BFA students require a cumulative average of 65% to proceed to 2nd Year. However, a 70% cumulative average is required in order to proceed to years 3 and 4 of the BA Criminal Justice-Criminology Stream and BFA programs.

Probation

Students will be placed on probation when at least 18 credits have been attempted and the student’s cumulative average is between 55%-59%.

Students placed on probation will be eligible to register in a maximum of 24 credits in the following fall/winter term (4 courses per term), and 9 credits in each of the spring and summer terms. Students placed on probation will be required to follow a comprehensive Academic Success Plan which could include mandatory academic advising, transition activities and study skills workshops.

Students admitted to the University on probation will be assessed once a minimum of 18 credits have been attempted and:
  1. If their cumulative average is 60% or greater, admission probation status will be removed and standing will be assessed as outlined above;
  2. If their cumulative average is between 55% and 59%, they will be allowed continue on probation (maximum of 18 credits) and will be reassessed once a total of 30 credits have been attempted.

Withdrawal from the University

Students will be required to withdraw from the University when:
  1. Their cumulative average is below 55%;
  2. Students on probation whose cumulative average is below *60%.

* Students on probation whose cumulative average is below 60% will be allowed to continue on probation, into the next term, if they achieve a sessional average of at least 63% while on probation. This will be permitted only if less than 57 credits have been attempted.

Any students required to withdraw will not be re-admissible to the University for at least one calendar year.

Any students required to withdraw from the University may appeal the decision to the University’s Undergraduate Standing and Petitions Subcommittee (S & P) at a specified date.

Upon Re-admission, students may petition the S&P Senate Subcommittee to exclude up to 18 credits from the calculation of the cumulative average. If such petitions are approved, all assigned grades will continue to be included on the student’s transcript.

Credit Attempts

A course is considered to have been attempted when a final grade has been assigned to it. A course from which a student has honourably withdrawn is not considered an attempt.

Students are permitted a maximum of two attempts at a particular course. If a course is attempted twice, the higher grade obtained will be used in the calculation of the cumulative average. If a student fails the course on a second attempt after first passing, the credits obtained for that course on the first attempt will be kept.

A student must receive departmental approval to attempt any course for a third time.

Average Calculations

Average calculations include failed grades.  All final grades below 50% are considered failures.  Final grades below 40% will be inlcuded in average calculations as 40%.  Final grades from 40-49% will be included in average calculations as the actual grades assigned.  All final grades will be recorded on official transcripts as assigned.

Cummulative and Graduation Averages

Cummulative averages are rounded up for progression purposes (i.e. a 64.5% will be rounded up to 65%)

Academic Level

A student's academic level is defined as follows:

First year: completion of fewer than 24 credits

Second year: completion of 24-53 credits

Third year: completion of 54-83 credits

Fourth year: completion of more than 84 credits AND registration in a 4 year program

Fifth year: for BA/BEd or BSc/BEd completion of more than 84 credits
