The MEd program is offered on a full and part-time basis at the North Bay and Brantford campuses. Both full and part-time students can also take courses online. In addition, some courses are offered on-site in the following locations: Barrie, Bracebridge, Sudbury and York Region (King City).

This section represents requirements for the following:
  • Master of Education

Program Requirements

All students must successfully complete the following core courses:
3 cr.
Plus one of the following two of courses:
3 cr.
Plus two courses from one of the following areas:


Students pursuing the thesis route must successfully complete one additional three-credit MEd course and EDUC 5454 Master’s Thesis. EDUC 5454 is equivalent to twelve credits.

Students pursuing the research paper route must successfully complete three additional three-credit MEd courses and EDUC 5115 Research Paper. EDUC 5115 is equivalent to six credits.

Students pursuing the research project + seminar route must successfully complete four additional three-credit MEd courses and EDUC 5186 Research Project + Seminar. EDUC 5186 is equivalent to three credits.

Degree Requirements

Students may complete the program through one of the following routes: Thesis Route, Research Paper Route, or Research Project + Seminar.

To graduate with a Master of Education students must:
  1. Satisfy all of the stated requirements for the degree.
  2. Successfully complete the following two core courses with a minimum grade of 70% in each course:
    1. EDUC 5196 Understanding Education
    2. EDUC 5157 Survey of Research Methods
  3. Successfully complete one of the following two courses with a minimum grade of 70%:
    1. EDUC 5116 Principles of Curriculum and Instruction
    2. EDUC 5336 Educational Leadership
  4. Successfully complete two courses from one of the following streams with a minimum grade of 70% in each course:
    1. Adult Education
    2. Language and Literacy
    3. Leadership
    4. Special Education
    5. Teaching and Pedagogy
  5. Successfully complete all courses in no more than two attempts
  6. Successfully complete one of the following
    1. EDUC 5454 Master’s Thesis
    2. EDUC 5115 Research Paper
    3. EDUC 5186 Research Project + Seminar
  • Students pursuing the thesis route must successfully complete one additional three-credit MEd course with a minimum grade of 70%
  • Students pursuing the research paper route must successfully complete three additional three-credit MEd courses with a minimum grade of 70% in each.
  • Students pursuing the research project + seminar route must successfully complete four additional three-credit MEd courses with a minimum grade of 70% in each.


Additional Information

Class Hours

Master of Education – Part-time Program

 
  1. Fall/Winter and Spring session classes are normally scheduled online or over a series of weekends or on weekly evening sessions;
  2. Summer session courses are held online during July and August or on-site throughout the month of July. On-site courses are scheduled two days per week.
  3. The number of hours of lecture per course and associated tutorials or laboratories, if any, is usually shown under the course description in the University Calendar.
  4. Class hours will total at least 36 hours per three-credit course.


Course Loads

Part-time students enrolled in the master of education program will only be allowed to register in two three-credit courses, in each of the Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer sessions.

Residency Requirements

Students enrolled in the Master of Education program must successfully complete at least 18 credits through online or onsite studies at Nipissing University.
