Nipissing University hosted the Harnessing Biomass Conference on October 22-23, 2010. This event had eight panels over the course of the two days, with numerous speakers presenting during each panel. The Biomass Innovation Centre decided that in lieu of a thank you gift to these speakers, a donation would be made on their behalf to the Biomass Innovation Award. The result was a $1000 award (that can be divided) which was presented to four 4th-year Business Administration students from the Business Strategy and Policy class. This class focused their efforts on clean technologies and biomass through papers and presentations on a variety of related topics.
The Biomass Innovation Centre Management Group, consisting of Bob Carpenter, John Nadeau, Pauline Rochefort, Brett Greene, and Kate Griese, evaluated the students and in early February presented the award to the following recipients: Eric Cauchon, Jason Dion, Peter Kincaid, and Samantha Lafleur. Each student received $250 to put towards their tuition costs.
Well done and Congratulations!!

OBEA Fall Conference
November 7, 2009
The Ontario Business Educators’ Association (OBEA) held their annual Fall Conference at Newmarket High School, in Newmarket, Ontario. As a member of the OBEA, Nipissing University’s School of Business and Economics attended the event as a vendor. Jessica Pratte, Liaison/Project Officer for the School of Business and Economics (SBE), handed out SBE posters and student guides to the secondary school teachers that attended the conference. She answered questions and promoted the different programs and courses that Nipissing University offers through the SBE. The majority of the teachers that approached the table were from Southern Ontario and those who were familiar with Nipissing University had a fondness for the school. Hopefully, these teachers will encourage their students to apply to and attend Nipissing for their business studies, because at Nipissing, students get more than a degree.
Second Annual SBE Team Huddle
October 2, 2009

On Friday October 2, 2009, the School of Business and Economics welcomed back faculty and students during their Second Annual SBE Team Huddle! In attendance were SBE faculty and students of all years and streams. It was a great opportunity to mingle with fellow students and faculty members over drinks and food. This year, the first-year students received their very own SBE “More Than a Degree” logo t-shirt to keep up the tradition from last year.
The crowd got to know their faculty members a little better through the game “Guess who worked here!”. The crowd had to guess which faculty member worked in various organizations and positions, such as a Subway sandwich artist, a pork farmer on the family farm, and a pool boy up in Kirkland Lake! The game resulted in a lot of laughs!
Thanks to everyone who came out and welcome back! It’s going to be a fantastic year!

2009 ACHIEVE Accounting Competition
SBE TEAM PLACED SECOND IN PROVINCIAL UNIVERSITY ACCOUNTING COMPETITION
http://www.ruas.ca/achieve2009pics.html
SBE Team from left: Stephanie McGinnis, Justin Chartrand and Ryan Webster
Justin Chartrand, Ryan Webster and myself competed in the first annual Ryerson University Accounting Competition in Toronto on Friday Feb. 6th, 2009. It was an amazing event with 13 teams competing from universities across Ontario. The day was filled with networking both with students and industry professionals. The competition itself has two parts. In the morning, we were given an accounting ethics case and had 45 minutes to come up with a solution and presentation. We then had to make a 10 minute presentation to a panel of judges. After lunch, we were given a second case, this one focusing on more technical accounting issues and had 60 minutes to come up with our solution and presentation and again we had 10 minutes to present our solution to a new panel of judges.
At the Awards ceremony, the judges announced that originally there had been a tie between the top two teams and they had been forced to come up with additional criteria to decide on the winner. Our team ended up in SECOND PLACE by 1%.
Sincerely,
Stephanie McGinnis
NUBC President
