The Practicum
The goal of the PRACTICUM is to provide the Teacher Candidate with opportunities for growth as a professional teacher. In the practicum, Teacher Candidates are "Learning to Teach while Teaching to Learn".
Practicum Placement Overview
Teacher Candidates in Year 1
First year Teacher Candidates commence practicum placements in the winter term and attend each Monday from January until the exam period. After exams, in April, there is a five day teaching block at the same placement.
Mentorship
Teacher Candidates in the first year of the program will each be assigned a mentor (upper year Teacher Candidate) for their practicum placement.
Teacher Candidates in Year 2, 3 and 4
Practice teaching is held every Monday commencing after Thanksgiving. There will be one consecutive five (5) day placement during April. Teacher Candidates complete approximately fifteen (15) days and one week (5 consecutive days) of practice teaching during each of their first three academic years. Therefore, our Teacher Candidates will be in their practicum placements for a total of twenty (20) days during the school year.
Teacher Candidates in Final Year
Final year Teacher Candidates have large blocks of practice teaching, each block is four weeks in length, and will be scheduled in second term between January and April. Junior/Intermediate placements require one (1) four week block in their teachable subject.
