Nipissing Nordic
Skiing
Nordic Skiing has a long history at Nipissing University,
with a recent hiatus, and now back again. The campus trail
network is being cleared of brush and a new Ginzu groomer
is ordered for the snow season, meaning top quality training
facilities on campus, including a sprint track, for classic
and skate techniques.
The University ski trails were the first developed system
of cross-country trails in the North Bay area, which now
includes the North Bay Nordic and Wasi Ski Clubs, and is
home of 2 current National Team athletes. The campus trails
were designed by Dr. Dave Rees, a retired Professor of
Geography, also a former Canadian Olympic athlete and President
of Cross-Country Canada. The renewed presence of a top-notch
network of groomed ski trails within steps of campus and
residences is a reason to ski and study at Nipissing University.
Few other universities in Canada can offer students skiing
from their doorstep. You can even ski to class!
After a successful team building year in 07-08, this is
the first year back for Nordic Skiing with Varsity status
at Nipissing. Our long term goal is to regain our OUA banner,
won in 1994. Are you a fast skier? Would you like to become
one? Four years of University means four years of training.
We will help you to make the best use of your time in order
for you to be your fastest over snow.
Team athletes receive year-long and weekly monitored training
programs, tailored to their needs and goals. We work on
technique and fitness at team practices and training camps-
both dry-land and on-snow. Full on-site race support is
available at local races for all athletes, and at Ontario
University Athletics (OUA) and National Championships for
selected travel team athletes.
