Laker's beat Trent and RMC at Fort Henry Showdown

KINGSTON, Ont. (October 17, 2009) – The Guelph Gryphons swept the men’s and women’s races at the Queen’s Invitational held Saturday on Fort Henry Hill – site of the upcoming 2009 CIS Cross Country Championship.

Lindsay Carson of Guelph University was the top runner in the women’s event crossing the line in 17 minutes and 19 seconds on the challenging five-kilometre course. Guelph captured the overall women's title, while the Nipissing Lakers Women's squad beat RMC to finish 12th overall.

The Laker's were led by BEd student Ali Farlow (21:22 for 99th spot overall), rookie BScN student Felicia Saunders (21:52, 104th), and 3rd year BSc Math major Taralynn Ray (21:53, 105th).

In the men’s event, Matt Brunsting led a trio of Guelph athletes on the podium with a 10 kilometre run of 31:51.4. Laker's athletes beat out challenger Trent University for 11th place overall. 3rd year BSc Geography student Kevin Gallagher ran an impressive personal best time of 35:29 (71st), followed closely by teammates Ben Brzezynski (35:53, 77th) and Paulo Carvalho (36:16, 87th). 140 men and 127 toed the line on Saturday's final University tune-up race before the Ontario University Championships, October 31st, hosted by Brock University in St. Catharines.

Both the Lakers Men and Women are within reach of beating Trent, RMC, York, and even hosts Brock at the Provincial Championships, so next Saturday's race will be an exciting season finale.

The Lakers Cross-Country Teams are coached by Dr. Graydon Raymer, Tim Uuksulainen, and Donna Mae Robins, and also are proudly supported by community sponsor Active Running and Therapy Centre.
