FIRST DAY OF CLASS

Nipissing University reserves the right to amend course offerings and course formats, and to limit enrolment and cancel courses. All on-site courses are subject to limited enrolment and it is recommended that students register early. Registering on-line is the quickest way to register and is strongly encouraged.  Minimum enrolments may vary and are based on the costs of running the course including the cost of classroom rentals. Wait Lists will be established once the course has reached its full capacity.

Absolutely no registrations will be accepted after the registration deadline.  We reserve the right to cancel courses with insufficient enrolment at the time of the registration deadline.  Full payment is required at the time of registration.  Deposits will not be accepted.  All outstanding documentation from previous sessions must be submitted before registrations will be accepted into subsequent courses.

On-site courses are offered in regions throughout Ontario including:  Brantford/Waterloo, York region, Simcoe County, Muskoka, North Bay, Parry Sound, Sudbury, Manitoulin Island, Sault Ste. Marie/Algoma, and Timmins.  An Area Coordinator coordinates course offerings in each area. Students are encouraged to contact an Area Coordinator for more information about courses in their area.

Many of our Additional Qualification courses require candidates to complete a practicum, action investigation, or directed observation component.

  • A practicum is an opportunity for you to integrate your learning and experience in a course and apply this to a real-life situation, observing and working with students.
  • In action investigation, the teacher is the subject of his/her own research inquiry. The purpose is to evaluate and improve one’s own teaching practice.  Practitioners take control of their own work and understand it better through a process of self reflection based on classroom data. The data is the kind that is usually collected by teachers in the course of their normal teaching and assessment activities.
  • Structured observation is a process of keeping anecdotal notes over a defined period of time. These observations provide formative assessment data to serve as a basis for program planning.

Nipissing University recognizes that our candidates come from a variety of different situations (e.g., full-time classroom teachers, occasional teachers, teachers on leave, teachers in remote areas, etc.)  These situations are not barriers to completing the practicum component of a course.  Through communication with the course instructor, a strategy can be negotiated that will meet the course requirement.
