Nipissing appoints new VP Academic and Research

Nipissing University is pleased to announce that Dr. Harley d’Entremont has been appointed Vice-President Academic and Research.

d’Entremont’s five-year term begins May 1, 2012.

d’Entremont brings almost 35 years’ experience in the university sector, 19 of those in executive positions. He currently holds the rank of Full Professor in the Department of Political Science at Laurentian University. Prior to that, he was Vice-President Academic (Francophone Affairs) as well as Director of Academic Staff Relations at Laurentian.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from St. Mary’s University, a Master of Public Administration from Dalhousie and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Western Ontario.

d’Entremont began his career at the Université de Moncton in 1975. He taught courses in public policy, public administration and local government. He eventually became the Director of the Department of Political Science, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Director of the Masters of Public Administration. From 1988 until 2001, d’Entremont was President of the Université Sainte-Anne in Nova Scotia.

While Vice-President at Laurentian, d’Entremont served as a member of the senior executive team. Part of his responsibility included preparation of the academic portion of the budget. He was also responsible for Francophone-targeted grants. He served as Laurentian’s representative on the Consortium of French (and bilingual) universities in Ontario and on the national board of the association of French-language universities outside of Québec. He also served as Laurentian’s representative on the Ontario Mineral Industry Cluster Committee. During his term as Director, Academic Staff Relations (concurrent with his VP role from June 2004 to October 2008), he was chief negotiator for two rounds of collective bargaining and developed new procedures for the hiring of faculty.

Throughout his career, d’Entremont has displayed a strong record of engagement in professional and community partnerships.  He has served on a number of national boards including the Association of Graduate Programs in Public Administration, Association des universities de la francophonie canadienne, Council of Nova Scotia University Presidents and the Association of Atlantic Universities.

“It gives me great pleasure to welcome Dr. d’Entremont to Nipissing University,” said Nipissing President Dr. Lesley Lovett-Doust.  “He brings a wealth of administrative expertise to the role, and is very familiar with the context of Northeastern Ontario. Dr. d’Entremont’s prior experience as a Vice-President, and his sound understanding of academic budgeting and strategic priorities will help propel Nipissing along the pathway to excellence.”

“I also want to offer my sincere thanks to Dr. Sharon Rich, who has done an outstanding job of engaging in strategic initiatives and providing continuity in the Office of the Vice-President Academic and Research over the past year.”
