National Chief Bellegarde lecturing at Nipissing

Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Perry Bellegarde will be at Nipissing University for a special lecture about closing the gap on Monday, September 28, at 7 p.m. in the Nipissing Theatre (F213).

The lecture, Closing the Gap Between First Nations and Canada: An Agenda for Action, calls on all Canadians to support closing the gap between First Nations and Canada. The gap is the vast difference in the quality of life experienced by First Nations people and non-Indigenous Canadians. It is evident in statistics showing that half of First Nations children live in poverty, life expectancy for First Nations citizens is five to seven years less than other Canadians, more than 40,000 Aboriginal children and youth are in foster care, and the more than 1,200 cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Closing the gap will create a more fair and just Canada and add billions to the country’s economy.

Bellegarde will set out a plan and vision for comprehensive, collaborative change to close the gap. The National Chief will explain why First Nations’ priorities are Canada’s priorities and the AFN’s efforts to ensure that these priorities are addressed during this federal election.

The lecture builds on the National Chief’s recent release of the eight-page document Closing the Gap: 2015 Federal Election Priorities for First Nations and Canada. That document is available, here.

“We are honoured to welcome the National Chief to our campus to speak about important issues that affect all Canadians,” said Dr. Mike DeGagné, President and Vice Chancellor.  “Universities play a leading role in transforming countries and communities by fostering dialogue, informing policy development, and teaching and inspiring individuals. Nipissing strives to instill in our students the sense that they can change the world for the better, making this lecture an especially important opportunity.”

The lecture will be followed by a Question and Answer session with National Bellegarde.

This event is free of charge and all are welcome.
