Lakers set to Break the Ice on Mental Health this Saturday night

This Saturday night, November 18, at Memorial Gardens, the Nipissing Lakers men’s and women’s hockey team are joining forces with students in the third-year Sports Marketing class to Break the Ice on Mental Health.

The Lakers women’s team is taking on the Ryerson Rams at 4:30 p.m. and the men’s team is playing the Queen’s Gaels at 7:30 p.m. Special purple jerseys have been created for the games; purple is the colour connected to mental health awareness. The games are also serving as an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for youth mental health, an initiative spearheaded by the students in the Sports Marketing class.

As part of the class, students were tasked with creating and marketing an event centred on mental health.  They were responsible for every aspect, from conception through planning and promotion to ensuring the event runs smoothly on game day.

Fans are also getting a great deal for some excellent, fast-paced and exciting hockey, with two games for the price of one. Tickets are only $5 for students, $7 for seniors, and $10 for Adults.

All proceeds from the event will support mental health initiatives, Do It for Daron and NU Listens.

To help raise funds, students will also be running games, raffles, and a silent auction as well as selling branded Break the Ice on Mental Health purple T-shirts and offering purple face painting.  Some of the prizes on offer include tickets to an Ottawa Senators game, a Jonathan Huberdeau signed jersey, autographed Clint Malarchuk books, a signed North Bay Battalion hockey stick, Lakers merchandise and baskets and gift cards.
