Policy of Designation of Governor Emeritus.Emerita

POLICY:  DESIGNATION OF GOVERNOR EMERITUS/EMERITA

Introduction
Nipissing University has a policy for the designation of Emeritus/Emerita allowing the title to be applied to Professor, Dean, Vice-President, President, Chancellor or any other academic position designated within the university.
It was deemed important that the Board adopt a mechanism for recognizing retired members of the Board of Governors who have provided outstanding service to Nipissing University.  Such recognition would not be forthcoming to all retired members of the Board; rather, it would be limited to those, who in the judgment of their peers, have provided active and distinguished service to Nipissing University in their capacity as members of the Board.
Criteria
·        served on the Board of Governors for the equivalent of two full terms or six years
·        demonstrated leadership in fulfilling the responsibilities and roles of a Board member
·        taken an active interest in the strategic direction and governance of the university and the activities of the Board of Governors
·        during the individual’s tenure of office as a Governor, made a significant contribution to the life and development of the university
Once granted the title would be continually held at the pleasure of the university
Method of Appointment
The Executive Committee of the Board of Governors of Nipissing University will consider nominations at any time for the Governor Emeritus/Emerita title.  Nominations must be in writing, include a rationale for the nomination and provide supporting signatures of at least three current or former external Board members.
The major criterion for nomination and approval should be the associative benefit to the university in continuing a formal relationship with a previous Board member who has maintained a distinguished record of service to the university and to the Board.
The Board Executive Committee will consider all nominations and forward recommendations for appointment to the Board for approval.  The Governor Emeritus/Emerita designation normally will be bestowed at the Spring or Fall Convocation of Nipissing University or awarded at the Annual Board Dinner.
Duties and Privileges
The primary benefits to the university and the recipient are associative.  The university benefits from retaining formal association with a distinguished governor while the recipient retains the right to use the Nipissing University name within an appropriate context.
Privileges of the Governor Emeritus/Emerita title could include the holding of a university I.D. card which allows full use of the Library, Campus Shop, sports facilities, email and other ‘system’ privileges enjoyed by regular employees of the university.
“Direct cost” items such as travel, photocopying, office space and clerical support will not be considered automatic privileges of the title.
There are no formal duties and there is no remuneration associated with the title of Governor Emeritus/Emerita.
