Designation of Emeritus/Emerita

Introduction
The designation of "Emeritus/Emerita" is offered in a University setting to individuals who have left the employment of the University and have "earned by service" the privilege of such an honorific title. In a University setting, the title could be applied to Professor, Dean, Vice-President, President, Chancellor or any other academic position designated within the University. For the positions of Deans, Vice-President, President and Chancellor, the following criteria would apply:

  1. they have served a minimum of ten years (eight years for Chancellor) full-time at Nipissing University and have retired from the University in that position (i.e., as a Dean etc.)

  2. they have served the majority of their time in that position (Dean/VP/President) with a minimum of ten years (eight years for Chancellor) of full-time service to the University.

Once granted, the title would be continually held at the pleasure of the University.
Method of Appointment
The Nipissing University Honorary Degrees Committee will consider nominations at any time for the Emeritus/Emerita title. Nominations must be in writing, include the reasons for the nomination, and provide supporting signatures of at least three Nipissing University faculty members.

Since the honor is provided in recognition of distinguished service to the University, the major criterion for nomination and approval should be the associative benefit to the University in continuing a formal relationship with a previous faculty member who has maintained a distinguished record of scholarly service to the University, their discipline and/or their profession. Normally, to be eligible for nomination an individual would have held the rank of Associate Professor or above, and would have had more than 10 years of continuous, full-time employment at Nipissing University.

Individuals with a minimum of twenty-five years of continuous, full-time teaching at the University may be considered for the title of Professor Emeritus/Emerita provided they have a record of distinguished service in such areas as program/department development, teaching excellence or significant academic contributions to the University.

The Honorary Degrees Committee will consider all nominations and forward recommendations for appointment to the Senate and the Board for approval. The "Emeritus/Emerita" designation will be announced at the regular Convocation of Nipissing University.
Duties and Privileges
The primary benefits to the University and the recipient are associative. That is, the University benefits from retaining formal association with an active scholar, teacher or administrator, while the recipient retains the right to use the Nipissing University name only in the context of appropriate scholarly endeavours.

Additional privileges of the "Emeritus/Emerita" title could include the holding of a University I.D. card which allows full use of the Library, Campus Shop, sports facilities, e-mail, and any other such "system" privileges enjoyed by regular employees of the University.

"Direct cost" items such as travel, photocopying, office space, and clerical support will not be considered automatic privileges of the title, but may be made available at the discretion of the President or his/her designate.

There are no formal duties and there is no remuneration associated with the title of Emeritus/Emerita.
