File Formats
With online courses, it is important that students can submit assignments which instructors (and possibly other students) can view on their own systems.
We suggest establishing a standard for posting files once the course starts. For example, in the case of research or analysis assignments, requiring that such files be saved as .rtf (Rich Text Format) generally avoids compatibility issues for users who do not own programs like Microsoft Word/Works or Corel WordPerfect. It is a common format that is read by a wide variety of word processing programs.
Blackboard itself has no preference when it comes to the kind of files submitted. It will accept a wide variety of file types as attachments, including .ppt, .pdf, .doc, .xls, .jpg, .bmp and .gif.
File Sizes
In order to maintain some control over how
much space a course takes up on the server, we ask that you pay attention to the size of attached files (both your own and your candidates). If your intended attachment is large (much over 10MB), please examine the file and consider what may be bloating it
and what can be done to reduce its size. If downsampling
is not a possibility, then try dividing the file into parts and
attaching each one to separate messages.
