Mandate
The Institute for Community Studies and Oral History (the Institute) will have as its mandate:
becoming a centre of excellence for research in the fields of community studies and oral history;
the promotion of exchanges between university researchers and individuals and organizations in the community working in the area of heritage, public history, and community history through joint projects, workshops, and other means; and,
the creation of an archive and/or research center which will collect, maintain, disseminate and make available to interested researchers research tools and primary sources required for the study of local and regional communities, including our own Nipissing University community.

Institutional Relationships and Administrative Structure
The Institute will be governed by a Director and an advisory Board who report to the VP Academic. The Board shall consist of all full time members of the History Department to which up to five additional members may be added. There will be one annual meeting of the Board. The first Director of the Institute is Françoise Noël. The Director shall seek the advice of the advisory board or its members as required. [top]
Research Associates
Members of the academic community whose research falls under the mandate of the Institute are encouraged to become research associates of the Institute. Research associates will have access to the research facilities and resources of the Institute. They shall work to promote the goals of the Institute and agree to deposit a copy of oral history interview tapes conducted during their association as well as other research tools or primary sources collected with the Institute. Memberships
The Institute is an Associate member of the Archives Association of Ontario. This allows us to list our archival collections in Archeon, the digital database of the AAO. [top]
Acquisition Policy
In keeping with its mandate, the Institute will collect records relating to Nipissing University and to the history and culture of the communities of North Bay and surrounding area including Mattawa, Sturgeon Falls, Bonfield, Callander, Powassan and others particularly in but not restricted to the Near North region, especially with regard to oral history interview tapes and records relating to Aboriginal communities.
The Institute will collect will collect both printed and non-printed material at the discretion of the director. This includes but is not restricted to textual records, photographs, maps, plans, architectural records, audio and visual records, oral history tapes, books, microfilms, and electronically stored data. The Institute will not normally collect artefacts or three-dimensional items.
A written record is kept throughout the acquisition process to track material and its creator/donor.

Donations
Materials offered as donations will be considered on an individual basis. The decision to accept donations will be based on the mandate of the Institute and the relationship of the material to the acquisition policy.
Material donated to the Institute becomes the property of Nipissing University which will also hold the copyright and other rights to that material. Tax receipts, if required, will be issued by the university.
Donors will be asked to sign a donation form. [top]
