Whereas in scientific and technical writing all numbers are usually as figures, in other academic writing numbers are usually spelled out. Please follow these guidelines:
Spell out numbers of one or two words If a number can be written as one or two words spell it out: Wrong: The protagonists car cost 500 dollars. Numbers that cannot be written in one or two words should be converted to figures. Wrong: The village of Needle has a population of two hundred and
thirty-seven. Please note that when using a spelled out number from twenty-one to ninety-nine, use a hyphen. Also note that, if one of several numbers in the same sentence needs to be converted to figures, convert all numbers to figures: Wrong: Of the 627 students at my high school, only ten came from
Asian descent and only twenty-four were Afro-American. Spell out numbers that begin sentences When a sentence starts with a number, spell out the number or rewrite the sentence so that the number does not come first: Wrong: 333 miles is a long way to travel on foot with fifty pounds
of luggage. Use figures instead of words according to standard practice Date: July 1, 1867
